Strategic Initiative: Webinar on Future Reference Frames
| 25 November 2025
Geodetic reference frames form the foundation for all mapping and positioning activities. As Europe faces increasing demands for precision, interoperability, and integration with global services, the limitations of ETRF are becoming more evident. Future transitions—such as moving from ETRF to ITRF and introducing new height models—will affect all national mapping authorities and their stakeholders.
Without a coordinated European strategy, these transitions risk becoming fragmented, slow, and costly, while creating growing discrepancies for users. A joint effort under the EuroGeographics umbrella will help ensure that Europe speaks with one voice, remains aligned with global developments, and continues to provide the geospatial infrastructure needed for innovation and competitiveness.
